    FAQs

    Need More Info?

Which IB programmes do your tutors support in Malaysia?

We support the IB Primary Years Programme for ages 3–12, the Middle Years Programme for ages 11–16, and the Diploma Programme for ages 16–19. Tuition varies by programme. Younger students may need support with concepts and schoolwork. Diploma students may need HL/SL subject teaching, exam preparation, and guidance on assessed components. Online lessons are available across Malaysia.

Which IB subjects can my child get tuition for?

Mixt Academy Malaysia offers support for mathematics AA and AI, biology, chemistry, physics, English, economics, business management, psychology, history, geography, ESS, computer science and selected languages where available. Availability may vary by level and subject. For PYP and MYP students, tuition can also follow the maths, sciences, languages and interdisciplinary work being taught at school.

What is the difference between IB Higher Level and Standard Level?

Higher Level and Standard Level are two levels used within the diploma programme. HL courses cover a greater body of knowledge and normally require more teaching time, while SL courses have a narrower scope. Both are graded on a scale of 7 to 1. Your tutor should therefore follow the correct level, assessment requirements and papers for each subject.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?

IB Mathematics has two diploma programme routes: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. AA places more emphasis on mathematical reasoning, algebra, and analytical methods, while AI focuses more on modelling, applications, and technology. Both are available at HL and SL. The right course depends on your child’s strengths and their future university requirements.

Can tutors help with Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and TOK?

Yes, our online IB tutors can explain assessment criteria, help students plan their work, discuss research questions and give feedback on structure, reasoning, data analysis and clarity. They can also support Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge planning. Assessed work must remain the student’s own, so tutors should guide and teach rather than write, rewrite or complete submissions for them.

How do IB tutors use past papers and mark schemes?

Past papers help tutors identify weak topics and show where marks are being lost under exam conditions. Students can practise individual questions, timed sections or complete papers, depending on the stage of preparation. Tutors also use mark schemes and examiner expectations to improve working, terminology, essay structure, data responses and the amount of detail needed for stronger answers.

Can tuition follow my child's IB schoolwork and current syllabus?

Yes, lessons can follow the units, topics and assessments your child is currently completing at school. The tutor can help with difficult concepts, upcoming tests, revision and earlier gaps without restarting the whole programme. For diploma students, lessons can also stay aligned with the correct HL or SL course and the current subject syllabus.

Can a tutor help if my child is moving from IGCSE to IB?

Yes, the move from IGCSE to the IB Diploma can feel different because students manage several subjects alongside internal assessments and the Diploma core. A tutor can help identify gaps, strengthen subject knowledge and introduce the style of IB questions and assessment. Support can also focus on study planning as the workload increases during the first year of the diploma.

How is the IB Diploma scored, and what does 45 points mean?

Each Diploma Programme subject is graded from 7 to 1. Six subject grades can contribute up to 42 points, while the Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay can add up to three core points. The maximum is therefore 45. A diploma normally requires at least 24 points, along with the other IB completion requirements, including CAS.

What is the difference between the IB Diploma and A Levels in Malaysia?

Both are widely used pre-university routes, but their structures are different. IB Diploma students usually study six subjects alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, while A Level students normally specialise in fewer subjects. The best route depends on the student’s school, learning style, subject strengths, and the entry requirements for future university courses.

How much does IB tuition cost, and how often should my child have lessons?

Online IB tuition at Mixt Academy Malaysia starts from RM60 per hour. One weekly lesson may suit a student needing support in a single subject. More frequent sessions can also help before exams, during demanding assessment periods, or when several gaps need attention. We consider the programme, subject level, current performance and assessment dates before suggesting a lesson schedule.

How do you choose the right IB tutor for my child?

We review your child’s IB programme, subject, level, current performance, and areas needing support before recommending a tutor. A diploma student taking Maths AA HL needs different help from an MYP student or someone working on English essays. The free 30-minute trial also lets you see whether the tutor’s explanations and teaching style suit your child.
